4 breweries in Ghent you should visit

Ghent, Belgium, may be known for its medieval canals and gothic cathedrals, but for beer lovers, it’s a hop-filled paradise. Whether you’re craving traditional Belgian ales or cutting-edge craft brews, Ghent offers a brewery scene as rich and varied as the beers themselves. Don’t know which one to pick? Well, we’ll get you started. Practical detail: Every Brewery on this list is within walking distance of each other.

For all the breweries, we have put down a google map link at the bottom of the page in the order to give you the best path possible from place to place.

1. Gruut Brewery

In the heart of Ghent, Gruut Brewery brings history to life by reviving a pre-hop tradition. Instead of hops, they use “gruut”, a proprietary blend of herbs and spices dating back to medieval times.

The result is beer that’s nostalgic and distinct, with earthy, spicy notes that stand apart from modern hop-forward styles. Their Blond, Amber, and Inferno are standouts, with the Blond featured on our BeerSecret beer boat tour.

Set in a medieval-inspired space, Gruut offers an immersive tasting experience and is closely tied to Ghent’s cultural scene.

BeerSecret’s favourite beer: BeerSecret’s favourite beer: The standout brew from Gentse Stadsbrouwerij Gruut is their Gruut Blond a beautifully balanced and crowd‑favorite ale. We love the citrusy and zesty touch of the beer, but clearly the hoppiness is not present.

2. Dok Brewing Company

Housed in the revitalized Hal 16, a former industrial site turned food and drink hall, Dok Brewing Company is one of Ghent’s most exciting craft beer spots.

Their ever-changing lineup ranges from hazy IPAs and dry-hopped pale ales to wild-fermented sours and experimental brews made with international collaborators.

What sets Dok apart is its creativity and community vibe. With up to 30 beers on tap and street food from nearby vendors, it’s a modern, social hub for craft beer lovers.

BeerSecret’s favourite beer:One of their standout core offerings is “Waar is Loca?”, a 6.5 % ABV pale ale brewed with rye and oats. It’s praised for its Aromas of passion fruit and stone fruit.

3. Stroom

Craft-focused and community-oriented, Stroom is known for hop-forward, collaborative brewing with a contemporary edge. Their modern tasting room and creative seasonal releases have quickly made them a local favorite in the Ghent Brewery scene

BeerSecret’s favourite beer: The standout beer from Stroom Brouwers is their “Supreme” (also known as Love Supreme), a beautifully tart and refreshing raspberry Berliner Weisse (4.2 % ABV). It pours a lovely pink hue with a bright nose of raspberry and citrus, and on the palate, the fresh fruit and balanced acidity create a crisp, drinkable sour perfect for summer sipping

Address: Forelstraat 27, 9000 Gent, Belgium 📍

4. Artevelde Brewery

Named for the famous Flemish statesman, this brewery pays homage to Ghent’s heritage through traditional brewing techniques.

Expect a refined selection of classic Belgian styles with subtle modern twists. It’s no wonder this brewery has become our second home on the BeerSecret Ghent Tours, including the popular 2-hour Beer Boat experience as well as both public and private guided tours offering visitors an authentic taste of Ghent’s rich brewing culture.

BeerSecret’s favourite beer: Artevelde Genste Wijze: Locals describe it with “’tis ier vree wijs”, meaning “it’s a lot of fun in here”, a perfect nod to its bold 8% ABV character. This Belgian gem has a lightly fruity aroma and a balanced body.
