Let’s have a 15 min walk to the brewery that wrote history 100 years ago as the Europe’s biggest brewery.
Wielemans: Observe the art deco heritage brewery surrounded by water and railways
A brewery that started their life in 1860 to create lambic & faro beer styles. No wonder that the brewery was located in the city center, where the Zenne river was the main source for each brewery. After the covering, the brewery escaped in 1885 outside Brussels and followed the railways towards the South and found the first tracks of the Zenne!
From then on, they were scaling enormously and producing unseen hectoliters of lager beer. Yes, it may sound disappointing, but since their visit to Germany during the Industrial Revolution, they became knowledgeable lager producers!
Since then, Wiels pils became internationally popular, a non-stop growth was obvious. A success has also it’s disadvantages, so the whole site was taken over by Artois who wanted to demolish the building. Luckily the former mayor protected the building and now it’s renowned as a cultural heritage.
So what are we going to see? Let’s enter this art-deco building and explore the old huge brew kettles which are the only remaining brewery equipment of our Brussels brewing history.
Now that we are in this Wiels area, let’s stroll down to the-one-and-only craft beer spot of Wiels area; a name mostly used by the neighbours.
Dekkera: Try more Brussels brews at Forest hidden gem beerspot;
Thé beerspot around Wielemans. Only craft beers to explore. This passionate beer owner felt more love for craft beer than his chosen study journalism.
